About Saguaro Stables
Experience the Spirit of the Old West in Tucson, Arizona
Welcome to Saguaro Stables, your premier destination for horseback riding in Tucson. Located at the doorstep of the iconic Saguaro National Park, we offer more than just a trail ride; we offer a journey through a landscape that has captivated the American imagination for over a century.
Whether you are a seasoned rider or a first-time guest, our mission is to provide an authentic Western experience that honors the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the majestic giants that give our park its name.
The trails you ride today exist thanks to a vision that began over 100 years ago. Long before Tucson became the vibrant city it is today, botanists and local boosters recognized that this “grandest stand of saguaros” needed protection.
The journey to establish this sanctuary was as rugged as the terrain itself. In 1920, the Natural History Society of the University of Arizona first sought to preserve these iconic cacti—already famous as symbols of the frontier in silent Western films. However, it wasn’t until March 1, 1933, in the final days of his presidency, that Herbert Hoover signed the proclamation establishing Saguaro National Monument.
The early years of the park were a true frontier struggle. The first rangers had to haul water from the center of town, and “cactus rustling” was a constant threat. For decades, many believed the saguaro was a dying breed, much like the Old West itself.
But the people of Tucson refused to let the vision fade. Through the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s (who built the famous Loop Drive) and the expansion of the monument by President Kennedy in 1961, the land was finally elevated to National Park status in 1994.
Today, Saguaro Stables is proud to operate in the shadow of these ancient giants, giving our guests a front-row seat to a conservation success story that spans generations.
